According to a report by MapsPeople, indoor navigation is a critical component for retailers looking to provide a seamless and personalized shopping experience. The growth of this sector is also confirmed by a report by MarketsandMarkets, which reports that the RTLS market in the retail industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 20% from 2021 to 2026.

Nextome is a leading company in the field, providing state-of-the-art RTLS technology that improves the retail experience.

This article delves deeper into market trends, insights, and concrete evidence that showcase the value Nextome's indoor positioning solutions bring to the retail sector.

Better wayfinding and a more engaging experience

Indoor navigation is a pivotal tool for improving the overall customer experience in stores, especially shopping malls. In fact, an RTLS system improves access to stores and products thanks to turn-by-turn navigation and maps. For instance, customers can search by product name, brand, category, even at home, or provide their grocery list and receive a customized route. The technology not only facilitates more accessible wayfinding but also contributes to creating a more engaging and tailored shopping environment that can seamlessly blur with the online experience.

Improved Operational Efficiency and Targeted Promotions

Beyond navigation, indoor positioning solutions are acknowledged for enhancing operational efficiency. Research reports a better average accuracy in inventory management for retailers using RTLS compared to those without. As customers, employees can also access accurate data on the product location and stock in real-time, increasing their productivity and freeing their time from less valuable tasks.

RTLS is an excellent tool for retailers who want to optimize store layouts to influence customer behavior and deliver targeted promotions and ads according to customers’ position. In fact, according to research, most retailers believe that location-based marketing significantly improves the overall customer experience by delivering relevant and timely information.

Unprecedented Shopping Experience Data and KPIs

When shoppers use an in-store mapping digital platform for indoor store navigation, it collects detailed data about their actions. The data includes browsing product categories, looking for individual items, and building routes to certain sections and departments.

Compared to e-commerce, until now, it was impossible to track data on visits and know consumers buying habits. For example, it was nearly impossible to calculate KPIs such as conversion rate. Today, it is possible with Nextome RTLS: in fact, our system provides detailed data on customers, such as frequency of visits, usual paths, and average time spent inside the store. This capability allows retailers to set up more personalized offers, enable loyalty programs based on the frequency of visits, engage customers through gamification, and optimize the profitability of stores and the Return On Advertising Spend (ROAS).

Also, it is possible to improve the performance of store layouts, thanks to heat maps that show the most frequently visited spots in the store, understanding which promotions have better results and prevent product demand.

My talk for Droidcon Turin was about background work (“A guide to Android Background Work in 2023”).

“Background work” means a task that must complete while the user isn’t directly interacting with the app. An example would be listening to music, where the phone should continue playing the song even when the screen is off or the user explores other apps.

At Nextome, we heavily use Background Work for our localization services: we receive signals from Bluetooth Beacons in the environment, we filter them to eliminate noise and we compute the position of the user or the asset. This needs to happen even when the phone is sleeping with the screen off for long periods of time.

What are the challenges to perform Background Work on Android?

Scheduling background work on Android isn’t always easy. The correct way to do so depends on many factors like:

Android Version installed on the Smartphone

Smartphone vendor (since different brands may use different strategies to handle background work)

State of the smartphone (low battery, stationary device in deep sleep)

Type of task (long running or small, tasks scheduled at exact time or in a time interval)

and more…

Most importantly, each Android version introduces different policies to avoid abuse, since background work could happen when the user is not aware of it and cause issues like battery drain.

There are also different tools that a developer may use to handle each time of work based on the circumstances.

In my talk, I decided to share what I learned during my work at Nextome and suggest appropriate tools for each case. Furthermore, I made some examples about background work and Localization, since sensible permissions like GPS and Bluetooth (that can lead to an exact position of the device), require additional security checks.

Can you share an example?

Yes, some smartphone vendors “kill” the app and all its processes when the app is removed from the list of recent apps. That may be “good” in the short term for users, to preserve battery life, but it turns to be harmful to the developer community that isn’t able to offer the same behavior of the app across all smartphone vendors.

There are a lot more examples about this online, for example on this website: https://dontkillmyapp.com/

RTLS solutions also contribute to reducing congestion within museums. With Nextome RTLS, visitors can receive real-time notifications about crowded areas, enabling a more even distribution of people within the museum. As a result, this will reduce queues and improve the overall experience. Our system also allows keeping groups and families connected through location sharing. Security personnel can also prevent and detect emergencies by always knowing where they're most needed.

Improved data analysis and operations

You can also use data collected from RTLS to analyze visitor behavior and improve museum operations. RTLS allows data collection on visitor preferences, dwell times, and frequently traveled routes. This information is valuable for museum management and future planning.

Augmented experiences thanks to third-party applications

RTLS solutions can expand their features by integrating third-party applications. With museum apps, Nextome RTLS enables additional features such as voice guides, interactive games, and augmented reality.

Adopting Nextome RTLS in museums offers a range of advantages that enhance the visitor experience and optimize museum operations. Improved navigation, immersive experiences, congestion reduction, data analysis, and third-party applications can create a more engaging and educational museum environment that will leave a lasting impression on visitors.

What is Nextome Hub?

Giangiuseppe Tateo: At its core, Nextome Hub serves as the brain of the Nextome system. It acts as a repository for essential information needed to manage environments utilizing our real time location system. This includes location algorithms for precise positioning, as well as tools for processing valuable metrics for Business Intelligence. Users can access these services through the intuitive Nextome Hub Web interface.

Who is the primary audience for Nextome Hub?

GT: While facility managers are the primary users, benefiting from real-time data and statistical analysis for infrastructure and system oversight, our vision extends beyond this role. We aim to create a unified access point for all stakeholders interested in location-based data. This includes operations managers making data-driven decisions and technology partners integrating location-based services into their offerings.

How has Nextome Hub evolved over time?

GT: Initially, Nextome Hub functioned primarily as a Content Management System (CMS), focusing on infrastructure data management for local mobile SDKs. Over time, it evolved to include geofencing, navigation area management, real-time location data collection, and visualization capabilities. It now offers features for configuring positioning and navigation, web-based tag placement calculations, suggestions for beacon deployment, and real-time visualization of indoor and outdoor data.

What can we expect in the future from Nextome Hub?

GT: Our future developments are twofold. Firstly, we aim to enhance the business intelligence engine to extract more insights from available data while maintaining flexibility for various use cases. Secondly, we plan to expand the management services for indoor spaces. This includes features for booking spaces and resources (like meeting rooms and workstations) and integrating non-positioning related sensors for access control, air quality, and environmental monitoring. Collaborations with other data providers will make Nextome Hub the go-to platform for indoor space management.

What sets Nextome Hub apart as a solution?

GT: Nextome Hub is built on a robust and well-proven system, making infrastructure and map management straightforward and flexible. It is designed to be easily extendable and integrable, allowing us and our technology partners to implement custom services with minimal effort.

What data is collected and how is it displayed?

Laura Notarangelo: The data in Nextome Hub can be categorized into two main types: infrastructure management data and location data. Infrastructure management data encompasses floor plans, device information, points of interest, recommended routes, and geofencing zones. Users can view and manage this data on a map within the Nextome Hub. Location data, generated by the Nextome computing engine, can be displayed through a blue dot on facility plans or in tabular form.

How long is the collected data retained, and what is its purpose?
