La digitalizzazione dei processi industriali richiede oggi strumenti sempre più avanzati per garantire visibilità operativa e controllo degli asset in tempo reale. Tecnologie come i Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) basati su Bluetooth Low Energy e i sistemi di identificazione RFID rappresentano due pilastri fondamentali dell’evoluzione verso l’Industria 4.0.

In questa intervista doppia, Aldo Pisanello, CTO, Chief Technology Officer & Strategy Manager del Gruppo Finlogic, e Domenico Colucci, Co-Founder & COO di Nextome, condividono la propria visione sulle rispettive tecnologie — RFID e BLE Indoor Positioning — analizzandone applicazioni, vantaggi e possibili integrazioni per la tracciabilità intelligente degli asset in ambito industriale e logistico.

L’obiettivo è comprendere come l’integrazione tra identificazione e localizzazione indoor possa abilitare nuovi modelli di smart factory, supply chain connesse e decisioni basate sui dati.

1 — Di cosa si occupa la tua azienda?

A.: Il Gruppo Finlogic è il più importante produttore di etichette in Italia e tra i principali integratori di sistemi di identificazione automatica e tracciabilità.  
Affianchiamo i nostri clienti lungo l’intera filiera dell’etichettatura: dalla progettazione e produzione delle etichette alla fornitura di tecnologie hardware e software per la gestione del dato variabile in qualsiasi punto della supply chain. 
Tra le soluzioni tecnologiche che integriamo ci sono anche i sistemi di localizzazione spaziale (RTLS), basati su tecnologia RFID. 

D.: Nextome sviluppa soluzioni di Indoor Positioning System (IPS) e Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) progettate per localizzare persone, asset e dispositivi in tempo reale all’interno di ambienti indoor dove il GPS non è disponibile.
Attraverso tecnologie software avanzate, la nostra piattaforma consente alle aziende di ottenere piena visibilità operativa sugli spazi produttivi e logistici, supportando i processi di digital transformation e di evoluzione verso modelli di Smart Industry e Industria 4.0.
Le soluzioni Nextome vengono applicate in fabbriche, magazzini, ospedali e infrastrutture complesse per abilitare funzionalità di asset tracking indoor, ottimizzazione dei flussi e miglioramento della sicurezza operativa. L’obiettivo è trasformare gli ambienti fisici in ecosistemi data-driven, in cui la posizione diventa un dato strategico per prendere decisioni in tempo reale.

2 — In cosa consiste la vostra tecnologia di localizzazione?

A.: I sistemi di localizzazione in tempo reale possono basarsi su varie tecnologie. Una di queste è l’identificazione in radio-frequenza (RFID).  
Questa tecnologia prevede l’utilizzo di etichette passive (tag RFID), dotate di un’antenna con un microchip e un micro-condensatore, che vengono “attivate” dai cosiddetti reader RFID ai quali restituiscono le informazioni in esse contenute e, grazie ai nostri algoritmi, la posizione puntuale del tag. In questo modo è possibile acquisire le informazioni relative agli articoli “taggati” e, contemporaneamente, conoscere la loro posizione spaziale.

D.: La tecnologia BLE-based RTLS (Bluetooth Low Energy Real-Time Location System) è un sistema di localizzazione indoor che utilizza segnali Bluetooth Low Energy per determinare la posizione di asset e persone con elevata precisione in tempo reale.
Il funzionamento si basa su beacon BLE e algoritmi proprietari di indoor positioning, che analizzano l’intensità e il comportamento dei segnali radio per calcolare la posizione all’interno di edifici industriali o logistici.
Rispetto ad altre tecnologie di tracking, il BLE RTLS offre importanti vantaggi in termini di scalabilità, ridotto consumo energetico e semplicità di integrazione con infrastrutture IoT esistenti.
Per questo motivo rappresenta oggi una delle tecnologie più adottate nelle smart factory, dove la localizzazione continua degli asset consente di migliorare produttività, tracciabilità e controllo dei processi.

3 — Quali sono i campi di applicazione delle vostre tecnologie RTLS?

A.: Gli ambienti della logistica e della produzione sono sicuramente quelli in cui integriamo più spesso le nostre soluzioni RTLS RFID-based che, comunque, possono essere particolarmente utili anche in altri contesti.
Le applicazioni più comuni nei settori della logistica e del manufacturing riguardano la localizzazione indoor di qualsiasi oggetto “taggato” come articoli, attrezzature e asset, finalizzata all’efficientamento dei processi e all'aumento della sicurezza sul lavoro in ambienti coperti dal sistema, tipicamente magazzini e fabbriche.
I miglioramenti dell’efficienza operativa portati dal sistema di localizzazione, uniti all’abbattimento degli errori e dei tempi di identificazione degli articoli garantiscono ritorni sull’investimento molto significativi in tempi brevi.

D.: I sistemi RTLS basati su Bluetooth Low Energy trovano applicazione in tutti i contesti in cui è necessario monitorare asset e operazioni in tempo reale.
Nel settore manifatturiero, permettono il tracciamento di materiali, semilavorati e attrezzature lungo le linee produttive, riducendo tempi di ricerca e inefficienze operative.
In ambito logistico e supply chain, l’indoor positioning supporta la gestione intelligente dei magazzini e l’ottimizzazione dei flussi di movimentazione.
Nel settore sanitario, consente la localizzazione di dispositivi medicali e personale, migliorando sicurezza e disponibilità delle risorse.
Più in generale, il BLE RTLS abilita nuovi modelli di asset tracking industriale, fondamentali per ambienti produttivi connessi e orientati ai dati.

4 — Come le due azienda potrebbe collaborare?

A.: L’unione delle competenze e la condivisione dei valori delle nostre due realtà potrebbero rappresentare una risorsa importante per i nostri clienti.
La specializzazione di Nextome nel mondo del bluetooth, unita a quella del Gruppo Finlogic in ambito RFID, consentirebbero di offrire una proposta unica alle aziende che valutano l’implementazione di un real-time locating system nei propri processi.
Queste, infatti, potrebbero contare su di noi non solo come integratori di sistemi tecnologici ma come veri e propri consulenti in grado di individuare assieme la soluzione e la modalità di localizzazione migliore per le loro esigenze.

D.: Una collaborazione tra Nextome e il Gruppo Finlogic potrebbe valorizzare la complementarità tra tecnologie di identificazione RFID e sistemi di localizzazione indoor RTLS.
Le soluzioni RFID permettono infatti l’identificazione automatica e affidabile degli asset lungo la supply chain, mentre la tecnologia BLE-based RTLS consente di monitorarne posizione e movimenti in tempo reale all’interno degli spazi operativi.
L’integrazione tra RFID e Indoor Positioning renderebbe possibile una tracciabilità completa: dall’identificazione dell’oggetto fino alla sua localizzazione dinamica in fabbrica o in magazzino.
Questo approccio integrato rappresenta uno dei modelli più evoluti di smart logistics e asset tracking Industria 4.0, dove dati di identificazione e posizione convergono in un’unica piattaforma decisionale.

5 — Ci sono progetti in corso o futuri in collaborazione?

A.: Il reparto ricerca e sviluppo del Gruppo Finlogic è sempre molto focalizzato sull'evoluzione delle nostre soluzioni tecnologiche, sia attraverso un accrescimento delle competenze interne al nostro Gruppo che mediante partnership con aziende di cui condividiamo la visione e i valori.
Da questo punto di vista Nextome può rappresenta sicuramente un partner di riferimento per le soluzioni di asset tracking e localizzazione spaziale.
La forte specializzazione sulla tecnologia BLE applicata all’indoor positioning aprono scenari interessanti per il completamento della nostra proposta di soluzioni RTLS.

D.: Nextome è costantemente impegnata nello sviluppo di ecosistemi tecnologici aperti, collaborando con partner specializzati in RFID, IoT industriale e sistemi di identificazione automatica.
Le future evoluzioni dell’asset tracking industriale saranno sempre più orientate verso soluzioni ibride che combinano RFID per l’identificazione e RTLS BLE per la localizzazione continua, permettendo alle aziende di ottenere dati operativi più completi e contestualizzati.
Pur senza entrare in dettagli progettuali, possiamo affermare che l’integrazione tra queste tecnologie rappresenta una direzione strategica per supportare fabbriche e magazzini intelligenti, abilitando analisi in tempo reale, automazione dei processi e maggiore efficienza operativa.

Droidcon Italy 2025, held in Turin on November 19–20, once again proved to be a key event for anyone developing in the Android ecosystem. As every year, Nextome joined with enthusiasm, sending two of our developers to closely follow the innovations shaping the future of mobile apps and, consequently, the future evolution of our location-intelligence and indoor-navigation solutions.

This year’s agenda was particularly rich and closely aligned with our technological focus. Among the most notable sessions:

Pamela Hill — Kotlin Developer Advocate, JetBrains

Her talk “Kotlin Multiplatform on iOS: Gotchas” highlighted how Kotlin Multiplatform has become a popular framework for sharing code across platforms (particularly Android and iOS). She focused on common “gotchas” developers might encounter when working with a single codebase across multiple platforms and how to resolve them quickly and correctly. A topic of great relevance for Nextome, as we aim to make our mobile indoor-navigation solution increasingly scalable and modular.

Marco Gomiero — Senior Android Engineer, Airalo

Marco’s session also focused on Kotlin Multiplatform. He shared hands-on insights from real development experiences — for example, why sharing less code can sometimes save more time, how managing the iOS Keychain from background services turned into a debugging odyssey, and how placing a database in the wrong Windows directory can silently wipe data during app updates. His discussion of the expect/actual mechanism was particularly interesting.

Alex Zhukovic — Senior Mobile Engineer, Postcode Loterij

Alex covered the foundations of effective UI testing, presenting an overview of how to build natural-language UI tests using Android Journey (currently in beta), with the goal of catching bugs before they reach end users. The talk provided a solid foundation for introducing UI testing — whether through generative, natural-language-based tools or the traditional industry-standard approaches — without imposing a steep learning curve. It was a highly valuable session for teams and developers looking to structure a more mature and effective quality-assurance workflow.
He also previewed the release of his new book — expected in 2026 — focused on best practices for integrating UI testing into development pipelines, a highly anticipated resource for the community.

Jetpack Compose & Accessibility — Vanessa Johnson (The New York Times)

One of the most impactful sessions we attended was delivered by Vanessa Johnson, Associate Android Engineer at The New York Times, who explored app development in Jetpack Compose with a strong focus on accessibility. She explained why accessibility is now an essential component of modern development, introduced Compose Semantics, and offered practical guidance for implementing truly accessible navigation. The talk also highlighted common accessibility mistakes developers make when integrating these features into their apps.

Cybersecurity & Mobile Protection

Several sessions were dedicated to mobile cybersecurity, covering a wide spectrum of topics, from cryptography fundamentals to more hands-on approaches such as reverse-engineering techniques and the adoption of passkeys for safer data management on mobile devices.

At the end of September, the 2025 training cycle at Nextome came to a close: a path that involved all our team members on key topics for professional growth, wellbeing, and awareness within the company.

The initiative included three main sessions:

Corporate First Aid Course – March 25 and 27

The cycle opened in March with the Corporate First Aid Course, a highly valuable activity both professionally and personally, carried out by Asso Service Srl - Confindustria Service Company – Bari and BAT.
Over two days, participants learned theoretical and practical skills to handle workplace emergencies, including:

identifying dangerous situations and correctly activating emergency services;

cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and the use of defibrillators (AEDs);

treatment of wounds, bleeding, and common traumas;

procedures to assist someone experiencing sudden illness while waiting for medical personnel.

The training highlighted how crucial timely action is and how even the simplest actions can make a difference.

Training Day on UNI PDR 125 (Gender Equality) – September 4

The second session took place in September and was dedicated to Gender Equality, following the UNI PDR 125 guidelines.
The day, led by Margherita Pennacchia, encouraged reflection on how companies can implement concrete policies and practices to promote equity, overcome stereotypes, and value everyone’s talent.

Giangi’s technical knowledge clarified some of the engineering challenges they were solving. Seeing how a startup operates in a different cultural setting gave me the opportunity to reflect and draw inspiration for my later experiences working in startups.

An expanded international network, which I’ve had the chance to use and rely on.

Innovation in Southern Italy: a collaboration between businesses to exploit Edge Computing

IoT Edge Computing represents one of the most promising fields for evolution in various application areas, such as mechatronics. It allows the introduction of enormous improvements to existing systems, such as greater resilience to power/network problems, but also the drastic reduction of latency and data traffic to the Cloud.

The IoT has profoundly transformed much of our daily activities, often becoming a reliable companion, since it has been, and still is, at the center of a real revolution. This is especially true in business contexts where continuous and constant monitoring of certain variables becomes a fundamental prerequisite for the proper functioning of systems, such as refrigerators for companies operating in the healthcare or food sectors, or gas and harmful substances in production plants. Since IoT devices often present limitations, Edge Computing completes technological evolution by enhancing devices without altering their discrete nature and ease of integration. If innovative elements that make solutions more regenerative and reparative are added, innovation is produced according to the sustainable and circular model.

The objective of the research project that Nextome is conducting as a member of the “Made in Italy Circular and Sustainable Foundation – MICS”, together with another Italian company, Tera srl, is based on these concepts. The project aims to create systems that, thanks to fundamental properties such as modularity and remote software reconfigurability, can reduce the average production of waste, thus extending the useful life of the systems. The purpose of the project is twofold since there is direct user involvement to achieve a more responsible and sustainable approach to use.

The research project, namely SMECS-DE2A, contains several interesting elements, as it has a strong characterization of industrial research, experimental development activities, technology transfer, and use of existing scientific, technological, and commercial knowledge and skills to develop new or improved products, processes, or services. The project is also favored by a new business model inspired by the principles of servitization; specific and innovative functionalities, also based on AI (Artificial Intelligence), for the efficient management of energy by prosumer users, in combination with localization functionalities, which give the project a further focus on innovation and sustainability.

The current evolution of Tera srl, from a strategic point of view, aims at becoming a continuous reference, at both regional and national level, for the integration of both skills and technologies, adding to those already within its human resources, other emerging technologies, identifiable for example in algorithms (AI-based, also with LBS services integration) for energy efficiency, in the ability to stress the concept of modularity and reconfigurability of mechatronic-electronic-ICT systems to the maximum.

Among the main reasons that lead both Nextome and Tera to believe in this project are the possibility of integrating with a player operating in different domains and reference scenarios, as well as the synergies and investing in a shared innovation project. But also, rethinking IoT devices by introducing modularity as well as a business model oriented towards servitization.

These motivations are evidently aimed at obtaining the widest possible impact from the activities of this project for both players, to lay a concrete and reliable seed in terms of future competitive advantage, through the growth of their know-how to such a level that they can then move to an operational plan that can lead to high-level technological products and services, but also such as to be clearly perceived by stakeholders as fully in line with the trend of sustainability and the circular economy, thus being both in real terms and perception a better company in a better global scenario.

Overall, the group is composed of a perfect mix of researchers, software engineers, data scientists, and more experienced business profiles, and we strongly believe that this team has the potential to make a decisive contribution in an evolutionary perspective not only for the realization of Location-Based Services but for IoT Edge Computing in general.

AI: A Revolutionary Force Shaping Our Future, Not a Threat to Fear

During last year, there was intense discussion about the various aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI), up to the point that it has been almost turned into a mass phenomenon. It has been a topic of conversation for teachers, tech companies as well as tech enthusiast, and various industries such as automotive, aerospace, architecture, medicine, and consumer electronics. The hype around this topic suggests that this is not just a passing trend; it demonstrates that AI represents a profound transformation that will leave a lasting impact on our society.

In the ongoing debate, two clear positions have emerged, overall: one group enthusiastically embraces AI as a testament to human intelligence, while the other group is apprehensive and fears its potential negative consequences on society, work, lifestyle. This polarization has muted, or at least made it difficult to express, nuanced opinions.

Many contributions to the discussion seem to oversimplify the complex picture by focusing on concerns, such as the fear that AI will eliminate jobs. However, the discussion should acknowledge the immense potential for AI applications without necessarily replacing existing jobs, but supporting workers, and creating brand new working places.

There are numerous pressing issues that AI could help address, including:

Creating an economic system that reduces social inequality.

“Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro”, now known as “Pathways to Cross-Skills and Orientation” (PCTO), is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Education that aims to integrate school education with practical experiences in real working environments and workplaces. This program offers high school students the opportunity to acquire useful skills and make informed decisions for their future career choices.

Nextome has enthusiastically embraced the PCTO project, recognizing the importance of training new generations and investing in human capital. The company collaborates with several high schools and technical institutes, offering students the opportunity to participate in internships and training placements within their structure.

During the visiting periods, students could work closely with Nextome professionals, participating in real projects, technical meetings and experimental campaigns, thus making it possible for them to acquire practical skills in areas such as software development, electronic engineering and project management. This type of practical training is essential to bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing students to successfully face the work.

The experience of Nextome in the PCTO program started several years ago, and it started in 2018, with a pause due to COVID-19 outbreak between 2020 and 2022. Nextome was pleased to welcome more than 20 students so far, each spending at least 30 hours with our team. Many of them have emphasized how this experience has allowed them to better understand their professional inclinations and to acquire greater awareness of their abilities. Today we asked some questions to one of these guys, in particular, Marco Ardito, who graduated in 2023.

Hi Marco, thank you for joining us today. How long did your PCTO period at Nextome last and how would you describe it?

Thank you very much for the opportunity. The experience was very positive and constructive, both from an academic and a personal point of view. It lasted about two weeks, during which time I had the opportunity to learn how to develop an application from scratch. I also gained a concrete understanding of how the working environment in the IT sector works. I could closely observe the requests and expectations addressed to designers. This experience allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge learned at school to real situations and to grow both in terms of technical skills and organizational and communication skills.

What skills and knowledge did it allow you to acquire?

First, I learned how to draft detailed technical documents, including all the specifications necessary for using an application. This allowed me to understand the importance of clarity in documentation, essential for the entire team for the future development of the project.

Furthermore, I developed key skills in collaborating within a work team. I learned how to organize and divide responsibilities, manage deadlines and coordinate activities with colleagues to achieve common goals. This experience taught me to communicate effectively, solve problems collaboratively and work in a dynamic professional context, enriching not only my technical skills but also my interpersonal skills.

What do you think was the value of an experience like this for you and your classmates?

This experience had enormous value both for me and for my classmates. From an educational standpoint, it allowed us to put into practice the theoretical knowledge acquired at school, dealing with real situations and concrete challenges proposed by working activities. We learned to work on complex projects, manage time and resources, and collaborate effectively within a team, fundamental skills for our professional future.

Furthermore, it provided us with our first real contact with the working environment, a career in IT, and what daily life is in this sector. This allowed us not only to acquire new technical skills but also to mature on a personal level, developing organizational and relational skills that will be valuable in any work context. For many of us, the experience also strengthened our interest in the IT field, offering us a more concrete vision of future opportunities.

How do you rate the working environment and the support you receive from your tutors and colleagues in the company?

Well, it was extremely welcoming. From the very beginning, I felt at ease thanks to the collaborative atmosphere and the inclusive approach. The tutors were always available for any clarification, demonstrating a great attitude and competence in guiding us throughout the journey. They stimulated our creativity, encouraging us to propose innovative ideas and find original solutions to problems.

Nextome and Smart Buildings innovation: the CUBE case in Berlin and all the challenges to come

Nextome is a technology company that deals with information technology and is therefore very interested in the whole tech world in general. Starting from technological scouting on new devices, up to the definition of new architectures and protocols, the company is engaged on several levels in the research and development of innovative and cutting-edge solutions.

Operating in the world of IoT and digital twins, Nextome is in contact with various realities of the industrial world, such as for example in the automotive field but also, more generally, factories and production plants. In this scenario we normally deal with process optimization, statistical and qualitative analysis of the products and the problems they may have. To do this, the process necessarily requires the creation of a digital interface that abstracts physical reality and creates, in effect, a virtual double.

We normally also apply this same type of work to the case of buildings for civil use in the field of smart retail, for example, but also to offices. Our cities today are increasingly populated by examples of smart buildings, that is, buildings that try to reinvent themselves and innovate their way of serving their purpose, such as offering personalized advertising services based on the user or knowing the habits of use of a common space in the office and optimize temperatures and lighting.

But a smart building today cannot simply be a building in which there are automations. It would be really simplistic to think that inside a modern building it is enough to modulate the temperature and reduce energy waste to a minimum with the lighting system to be able to define it as "smart". In fact, especially in some cities, there are some really interesting examples of smart buildings. One of these is the "Cube", in Berlin, a building whose purpose is to experiment with frontier technologies and solutions in the field of smart buildings.

The experiment amazes on several levels. First of all, from an architectural point of view, because it is beautiful; It looks like a perfect cube of just under 20,000 square metres, completely covered in triangular-shaped windows. The external double glass facade provides considerable daylight, natural ventilation and protection from solar radiation accumulations, while on the outside the surface reflects the surrounding environment creating an important visual spectacle.

The interior includes a series of rooms and spaces, for office use and beyond, which can be visited by the public, created with human well-being at the center of the design. The leased companies have around 17,000 square meters of usable space at their disposal in the CUBE Berlin, which can be flexibly expanded and adapted to the needs of the employees. The possibilities of the smart office building are also evident in the operation of the office space. For example, users can book free workstations or rooms and control the room climate via an app. Of course, some processes also work automatically — such as access to the building or even operating the lift.

But what really makes the CUBE special is found on the inside. At its heart is the so-called “brain”, a central control unit equipped with AI. A total of approximately 3800 sensors have been installed inside the building for the intelligent control of entrances, elevators, heating, cooling and lighting of the entire building. Control takes place via a convenient user interface configured as a mobile application; the latter can also be used for internal communications between the various offices and for booking areas and meeting rooms.

In order to optimize the building's processes, the recorded user data is analyzed and evaluated, and suggestions for improvement are then derived. The systems are then optimized accordingly. In areas that are not used much, for example, the heating, ventilation, cooling or lighting systems are automatically adapted to the users or switched off when not in use, increasing energy efficiency. In addition, heat gained from solar radiation and the building itself is used to cool the fresh air, and a special solar coating on the glass façade minimizes the heating of the interior rooms in summer. According to its own information, the building even undercuts the specifications of the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) by about 25 percent thanks to these technical innovations. It is also said to be able to generate around 50 percent of the total primary energy used by the building regeneratively thanks to heat recovery and the use of solar thermal energy directly in the building.

Well, what more can we say about a building like this? For Nextome, a scenario like the one just described represents the best possible playgorund. It would be wonderful if there were more buildings of this type and perhaps they were also equipped with systems and software interfaces for integration with other systems. In an environment like this, Nextome's technology that allows localization and navigation would represent a real added value for newcomers or occasional visitors, such as event speakers or guests.

It is precisely in realities like these that a company like ours wishes to enter, to test itself even more, even better, in more challenging conditions and with the participation of multiple actors who simultaneously attempt to improve the sustainability of the entire system.

A window on the (digital) future of the Italian economy

Transformation, R&D, integration, human-centred technology: these were just some of the keywords of the educational webinar ‘New digital frontiers for the Italian economy’, organised by Bericus with Nextome, and held on Thursday 11 July on Zoom. Dozens of entrepreneurs, researchers, managers and startup founders from all over Italy attended to listen to thirty-two high-profile speakers discuss the technologies that are and will be most influential in four strategic sectors for the Italian economy: logistics, healthcare, retail and smart building.

The webinar was opened by Paolo Traverso, a leading expert in artificial intelligence and director of strategic planning at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), a major research centre at the European level. Traverso pointed out that the AI and microelectronics sectors are attracting huge investments and that "this is a time of great opportunities for innovative start-ups and SMEs able to collaborate with larger companies or, in the case of system integrators, to pivot. The applications are endless: in medicine, in the circular economy, in weather monitoring, and many others". One of the tasks of a research centre such as the FBK is to accompany companies in this radical transformation.

Speaking from his office in Conversano, Nextome co-founder and COO Domenico Colucci thanked the speakers for accepting the invitation to participate in a webinar "designed to be a time to dialogue with and learn from experts, opinion leaders, researchers and academics about what is happening in such important economic sectors," and recalled the fruitful dialogue that emerged during the previous webinar, organised by Bericus and Nextome in May, entitled "The South, Italy's techno-scientific engine". For his part, Gabriele Catania, analyst and president of Bericus, noted that "in the coming decades, the Italian economy is likely to be overtaken by Asian or African economies and that demographic decline, added to the dramatic effects of the climate crisis on the Mediterranean, requires Italy to focus in the long term on science, innovation and new human-centred technologies".

The webinar lasted for more than four hours and was made up of four round-table discussions. During the first, entitled "Digital technologies (and more) for logistics", Nicoletta Buratti, associate professor at the University of Genoa, explained that "robotics will be one of the technological trends in which more investments will be made in the future, because the demand for automation in logistics is growing. And, with the increasing digitalisation and automation of processes, the search for innovative security and cybersecurity solutions will also play an important role".
According to Aldo Pisanello, CTO of Finlogic, "logistics today is under a great deal of pressure: the sector's players have to perform in ever tighter timeframes and adapt to being modular, by areas and by missions. Digital technologies must help logistics not to be overwhelmed by the dynamics of the market". He also pointed out that "efficiency is mainly achieved by reducing errors in the warehouse, errors that can be reduced by various technologies".
According to Alessandro Garola, CTO of Eurofork, "the ability to monitor efficiency, the state of performance, will become increasingly important, as will the use of big data to process it and get meaningful KPIs that are easy for everyone to understand, even non-specialist users. The aim is to make the technology simple, easy and user friendly".
Zerynth's technical sales strategist, Matteo Cipriani, emphasised the importance of technologies that help manage and analyse data in order to increase the efficiency of energy consumption, for example: "Understanding energy efficiency and the actions needed to save a little each month means being more sustainable, but only with data can this become truly effective".

During the second round-table discussion, managers, academics, researchers and startup founders from Italy and abroad spoke about new technological horizons for the healthcare sector, presenting ongoing research projects and innovations of great interest. Human resources are, of course, fundamental to these processes, and the CEO and founder of Isinnova, Cristian Fracassi, a top innovator based in Brescia, emphasised that innovation often comes from the collaboration of people with very different backgrounds, "because when faced with a problem, everyone tries to solve it using their skills". It is no coincidence that Isinnova is always on the lookout for new techno-scientific talent to add to its internal knowledge base.
For Luca Boschetti, a manager at Metreo, "the innovation of a process or a product is increasingly the result of sharing ideas and listening to new needs, which can open up huge markets". This is why Metreo collaborates with leading universities and research centres throughout Italy, for example in the field of research into new materials for additive manufacturing, including in the healthcare sector.

The third round-table discussion, which brought together entrepreneurs, academics and managers from key players in the sector, was dedicated to the retail of tomorrow. Daniele Romeo, innovation manager & digital transformation specialist at Axians Italia, spoke about the growing importance of technologies based on traffic analysis, behavioural analysis and computer vision within stores, always with a human-centric perspective, because shopping is, more and more, an experience.
Luigi Traverso, head of B2B solutions at Intesa (Kyndryl Group), stressed the importance of digitalisation, as the effectiveness of solutions based on artificial intelligence depends on the availability of large amounts of data. For example, he explained, "the digital exchange of documents can help optimise routes and therefore the cost of products, an optimisation that can make things easier for consumers when they arrive at the supermarket" and help make the whole process more competitive and sustainable, including from an environmental point of view.
Alexandre Rochat, innovation intelligence manager at Esselunga, spoke about the chain's research and testing of innovative solutions, for example to tackle food waste or to improve the customer experience in its stores. Rochat also emphasised the need to understand the evolution of customer expectations and needs in order to assess whether a particular store model will still be relevant in ten years' time.
Indoor localisation was the focus of the contribution from Fabio Ostuni, sales and business development at Nextome. According to Ostuni, localisation can be a service enabler for retail, as it can be very effective in providing highly valuable data, such as the number of people entering a store in relation to sales performance. "For example, localisation could enable local network marketing initiatives to promote shopping in local stores".

The last round-table discussion, entitled "Innovation for Smart Building", tackled this important topic from different perspectives, with speakers from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Paolo Sattamino, technical director of Harpaceas, gave several examples of new technologies that are making their way into the construction sector (such as BIM and Digital Twin), explaining that they can be extremely useful, especially in two important market trends: "safety and sustainability, two key aspects for all stakeholders".
According to Alessandro Lodigiani, Country Manager for Italy at R2M Solution, "regulations will increasingly demand to prove not only that a building has been well designed and constructed, but also that it pollutes as little as possible and is ready to be reassembled or dismantled and reassembled, in a circular economy perspective, unlike what has been done in the past". And this transition, says Lodigiani, is based on digitalisation.
Speaking from his office in Germany, Stefano Remondino, innovation officer at JaKo Pionier, emphasised that in the construction sector, "in some cases, innovation has to take on different key performance indicators from the usual ones: it's not about profits, it's not about the possibility of scaling up like a big tech startup. In some cases, it is about enabling certain elements even in historic buildings," such as the production of clean energy through innovative architectural elements.

The webinar was concluded by Alessandro Cimatti, director of FBK's Digital Industry Centre, who gave an overview of the great innovative capacity of his centre, a pillar not only of FBK but also of the innovation ecosystem of Trentino, in north-eastern Italy.

AI, RTLS, Big Data, IoT and other technologies are transforming logistics, healthcare, retail and smart building. Experts from all over Italy will talk about this during the webinar "New digital frontiers for the Italian economy", which will be held on Thursday 11 July, on Zoom, from 14:00 to 18:10. The keynote speaker will be Paolo Traverso, a leading Italian expert in AI and Director of Strategic Planning at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler.

The webinar is organised by Bericus, an analysis and training company based in Vicenza, and Nextome. It will be structured around four round-table discussions with managers and founders of tech companies, top researchers, and young founders of start-ups and scale-ups from all over Italy (and abroad).

The South, a great development opportunity for Italian companies and start-ups

On 28th May the webinar "The South, Italy's techno-scientific engine" took place, organised by Bericus, an analysis, training and internationalisation company, with the support of Nextome, a leading RTLS company based in Puglia. 25 high-profile speakers – managers, researchers and start-up founders – not only from Italy, but also from the UK and the USA, connected to participate in the webinar, moderated by journalist Valentina Saini.

One of the aims of the webinar was to raise awareness of the huge techno-scientific potential of Southern Italy, which, thanks to excellent universities and research centres, and high-quality companies and start-ups, is able to attract investments from knowledge-intensive companies from the rest of Italy and the world. During his keynote speech, Mattia Barbarossa, CEO of the space startup Sidereus Space Dynamics and a Campanian by birth, said that creating a startup means being able to adapt quickly and to accept the blows of fate, and that doing so in southern Italy is like "running a marathon in the desert: you don't have the resources, but you also don't have the obstacles, the competitors" that you have in the US, for example.

"The South's ability to innovate is leading to an unprecedented dynamism, also in economic terms," said Gabriele Catania, geopolitical analyst and president of Bericus. "And the growing global instability is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for the South, as it can favour reshoring and friendshoring".ù

The topic of the first webinar roundtable was the kind of mindset required to launch a start-up. Domenico Colucci, co-founder and COO of Nextome, explained that being an entrepreneur in the South (and everywhere) takes a lot of perseverance and the humility to "be able to listen to the customers, adapt the product to their needs and go towards the market". Colucci, who described Nextome's journey from its beginnings to the important results achieved in recent years, focused on the pros and cons of doing business in the South. On the one hand, you can enjoy a good quality of life, "work while looking at the sea", and draw on a pool of talented professionals; on the other hand, there is a disadvantageous, albeit diminishing, infrastructure gap. For example, the most efficient way to get from Bari to northern Italy is by plane.

Lucia Arcarisi CEO of Weabios, Riccardo Tornese CEO of Tactile Robots, Rocco Paladino CEO of Meangrip Game Studios, and Stefano Toxiri CEO of Proteso, shared their experiences as high-tech start-up founders. Of particular interest was the presentation by Paolo Pasini, HR Department Development of UNITEC, who outlined the history of the company, a world leader in sorting solutions and technologies for fruit and vegetable processing, was especially interesting. According to Pasini, having an entrepreneurial mindset means forming "an alliance with the customer". Indeed, UNITEC's mantra is to work with customers to achieve maximum efficiency and quality.

The second round table, entitled "Making the AI revolution a reality", brought together prominent experts and managers to analyse the impact of AI on the driving sectors of Southern Italy's economy. The speakers at this round table were Edoardo Pasolli, associate professor at the University of Naples Federico II, Jacopo Staiano, researcher at the University of Trento, Raffaele Boscaini, marketing director at Masi Agricola, Vincenzo Dentamaro, founder of Nextome and researcher at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro" and Vincenzo Tommaseo, Agronomic Products Specialist at xFarm Technologies. Dentamaro used interesting examples to explain the impact that AI can have on retail and warehouse management.

During the third round table, "From the South to the World (and vice versa)", researchers and managers from Puglia, Campania, Sicily and Basilicata shared their experiences abroad and with foreign countries. For example, Valerio Marra, International GTM Executive & Multiphysics Simulation Engineer who was born in Taranto but has lived in Boston for years, shared some of the lessons he learned in the United States: being open to experimentation, not being afraid to fail, and the will to give everyone a chance. Gero Micciché, Electronic Arts's Development Director, originally from Sicily, said that in the UK, diversity of culture, background, etc. is seen as a key asset. But while going abroad to study and work is an opportunity for growth, returning home and contributing to the progress of one's community is rewarding: after MIT Boston and Imperial College London, for example, Neapolitan Velia Siciliano returned to her hometown, where she is a principal investigator tenured at the IIT Centre in Naples. Dr. Siciliano recalled two strengths of Italians abroad: versatility and adaptability. Stefano De Vivo, COO of the audio games startup PlayNook, praised Bari's profound transformation in the last 10-15 years, while Fabio Ostuni, Sales and Business Development at Nextome, stressed that an innovative company can work with major international players and attract talent even if it's based in a southern town. Davide Colangelo, CEO of Digital Lighthouse, a high-tech company based in Basilicata but with national and international projection, spoke of the outstanding potential of his region, thanks also to good universities, a high quality of life and an efficient public administration.

The fourth and final round table focused on smart buildings, smart cities and the modernisation of the building stock throughout Italy, from south to north. The speakers were Marco Citro, CEO of BioBuildingBlock, Luca Lucchese, director of investor Spreentech Ventures, Andrea Stefanina of Isinnova M&C, Christian Sottana, strategic director of Venezia Heritage Tower and Giangiuseppe Tateo, founder of Nextome and Product and Platform Leader. Tateo explained how Nextome has contributed to an important project in the field of smart mobility, an essential element of the cities of the future, thanks to its location systems, in particular a passenger tracing technology.

Thanks to the digital boom, and a centuries-old tradition of high education and creativity, the South has what it takes to become an engine of development for the rest of Italy - and the continent. This is the subject of the webinar "The South, Italy's techno-scientific engine", to be held on 28 May from 14:00 to 18:10 on Zoom (in Italian). It will be moderated by journalist Valentina Saini, and the keynote speaker will be Mattia Barbarossa, founder and CEO of Sidereus Space Dynamics, a space company headquartered in Salerno, Italy.

Nextome is a software house with a predominant focus on people and object localization and navigation services. However, the decade-long experience in the field has revealed that in the industrial sector, there are various needs and driving forces towards the modernization not only of products but also of processes, as well as mechanisms and production lines.

In the context of Industry 4.0, where both automation and integration of production processes are crucial for competitiveness, the SCORE Project emerges as an innovative hardware and software solution designed to optimize the management of industrial machinery, aiming to revolutionize how companies manage and monitor their production facilities.

At the core of the SCORE project, there is a hardware device, designed to be integrated into industries' local networks.
